WASHINGTON: NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) aircraft began its final flight on Thursday. The US Space Agency (NASA) has shared some thrilling pictures of the universe taken by SOFIA. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) informed on Instagram that the SOFIA telescope, the world's largest airborne telescope, was flown aboard a modified Boeing 747 aircraft. SOFIA has flown 921 flights since 2010.

This telescope flew for round trip with some astronauts. NASA wrote in the caption, "Sofia has observed many celestial objects, hovering at an altitude of about 41,000 feet (12,500 meters) in the dark of night and the dark of morning."

The details of the pictures shared by NASA are as follows-

The first image is of 'Centaurus A-Galaxy' - a path of orange and dark red dust in its center and a light blue shell on its outskirts.

The second image has a 3D view of the 'Orion Nebula', revealing the nebula's detailed structure, including a "bubble" that has been cleaned of gas and dust by a powerful stellar wind.

The third picture is of the 'Cigar Galaxy'. It shows the red streamline moving outwards due to the central explosion. A ring of brown starlight is visible around its center and the red color around this ring is visible due to the presence of hydrogen and yellowish dust.

The fourth picture is of the 'Omega Nebula' and the fifth picture is of the Sofia mission flying at sunset. SOFIA, for which NASA partnered with the German Space Agency (DLR), is a flying observatory. The work of making SOFIA started in 1996. SOFIA made its first flight in 2010, although its full operational capability was developed in 2014. In the year 2020, it helped to find evidence of water on the part illuminated by the sunlight of the moon. 2022 has also been very interesting for Sofia as it helped to find more water on the surface of the moon.

Thanks For Being here 🤫
